"Art Has No Gender“ by Walter Maurer & Marija Mandic
'Art Has No Gender' is an art project where, for the first time in the history of Art Cars, a man and a woman from two different generations -1942 and 1972; Walter Maurer and Marija Mandic - jointly paint a car, expressing the story about unity and gender equality in arts and life.
Past exhibition
2021 The BMW 3.0 CSL Artist’s Proof debut “Alexander Calder Minimal / Maximal” Exhibition at the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, Germany
In 1975, Walter Maurer painted the BMW Group's first Art Car according to a design by Alexander Calder. The Art Car was commissioned by French racing driver Hervé Poulain and BMW. Calder's great wish was to include the first BMW Art Car duplicated as an Artist's Proof in his own private collection. Unfortunately, Alexander Calder passed away in 1976, just a few weeks later after the first Art Car’s debut at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.
In 2020, the Artist's Proof Art Car was commissioned by Calder’s grandson and president of the Calder Foundation in New York, Sandy Rower. He fulfilled his grandfather's dream and could rely on Walter Maurer, who painted and realized both original Calder Art Cars in his studio in Germany.
